Friday Classes
SPINNING LLAMA & ALPACA: Fiber of the Kings (6 hour class)

Today there are two special long, luxury hair fibers raised in the states for spinners to work with. These are brushed or clipped llama and suri or huacaya alpaca. Spinners will learn how to clean, prepare, spin and blend to make the most of their fiber investments in these exciting fibers. This workshop studies each fiber raw and processed so that you can compare the fibers. We will be using both woolen and worsted techniques.
Students should bring: A good working wheel, lazy-kate and extra bobbins, hand cards, hand combs, ball winder, about a dozen 3×5 file cards, sandwich baggies, scissors, stapler, hole punch or tape for attaching yarns and fiber, small towel and your usual assortment of wheel tools-screw driver, oil, etc.

NATURAL DYEING- How to Get 20+ colors from the Primary Three

Natural dyes will dye wool, cotton, linen, silk or synthetic nylon. Whichever you prefer, a few simple steps will prepare it for dyeing. Using cochineal for red, indigo for blue and goldenrod for yellow and then over dyeing these primary colors, students will get secondary colors: orange, green, violet and then tertiary color and on and on… Dyeing is a wet and at times messy art, dress in old and dark clothes. Each student will get samples of all of the colors.
Students should bring: Rubber gloves, pen, notebook and scissors.

NORDIC CHRISTMAS STOCKING (6 hour class)

Skill level: Familiarity with knitting in the round(circular or dpn)
Students will learn yarn wrangling techniques, chart reading, dealing with decreases, etc. This class is a variation of my Fair Isle Hat Workshop. Students will begin work on a 14” long, toe up, stranded Christmas Stocking, with an afterthought heel. Students knit the toe in advance as homework (or they may use a provisional cast on, and knit the toe later), and as a class we will knit past the waste-yarn heel in the first half of the class. In the second half, we will knit the afterthought heel, and then continue with the cuff until the end of class. Detailed handouts, sock pattern, and charts are provided. It is not likely that all students will finish their stockings in class, but they should have the tools and information to finish on their own.
Students should bring: Size 8 dpns (or long circs if they’re Magic Loopers), and 2-50 gr balls of solid worsted weight yarn highly contrasting colors, several yards of contrasting waste yarn.
Homework: Pre-Knit Stocking Toe: with Size 8 needles and dark worsted weight yarn, CO 20 sts. Divide on needles as desired, without twisting the sts, join. Rnd 1: K; Rnd 2:(K 5, Inc 1), rep around. Rnd 3: K; Rnd 4: (K 6, Inc 1) rep around. Repeat those 2 rnds, working 1 more st before the inc on each even rnd, until there are 50 sts.

INTERMEDIATE TABLET WEAVING (3 hour class)

Skill level: Basic weaving skills, 8 years and older
Learn to weave simple images or lettering in the double face, double turn tablet weaving technique. Pre-made warps will be provided to get you weaving right way and the continuous warping method will be demonstrated. Many different scripts, including Hebrew will be available.
Student should bring: 2 – 3” or 4” ‘C’ clamps, graph paper and pencils.

SPINNING THICK AND QUICK YARNS (3 hour class)

Spend class time learning how to spin those quick heavy weight yarns. Bring a slow speed wheel and fibers. Learn how various preparations effect spinning thick yarns. We will work with hand carded, drum carded, and sandwich preparations. So bring about any fibers you have on hand and a drum carder if available. I will bring a variety of fibers for spinning.
Students should bring: A good working wheel with the slowest speed, fibers, hand cards, drumcarder(optional), scissors, a small hand towel, hole punch stapler or tape for attaching sample yarns and fibers, a dozen sandwich baggies and 3×5 cards, oil, screwdriver and other tools for you wheel.

HOW TO “SPEAK” DOG (1 1/2 hour class)

See how dogs speak to each other and learn how to “talk dog” to your beloved dog. Learn the “why” to your dog’s behaviors and become the pack leader.

Creating original solid and self-patterning yarns is easy and fun with this method that combines Japanese Shibori techniques and modern commercial fiber dyes. Utilizing a wide variety of colors, each student will dye and take home two full-size skeins of wool yarn, ready to be made into caps, mittens, scarves or socks, or combined with other yarns in larger projects. Supply fee includes two 100-gm skeins of yarn, all materials and Sue’s video tutorial.
Students should bring: Old clothes or bring an old shirt or apron to wear during class – these dyes are permanent!

KNITTING NEEDLES KEEPER – BASKET WEAVING (3 hour class)

Always looking for your knitting needles – an answer – this beautiful basket. It can be used for pencils (shorter) or holds a vase with water for those fresh flowers (put the vase into the basket – can’t see the stems). This is just a few ideas for this basket that uses colored reed for accent, an oak wood base and is woven in a continuous weave.

BEADED LACE SCARF (3 hour class)

Beads add interest and texture to your knitting. This class explores different techniques and tools for adding beads to your knitting including pre-stringing, crochet hook, dental floss, wire; along with looking at placement of beads on the stitches to achieve different effects. You’ll start a scarf in class from the supplied pattern that includes multiple techniques and placements so that you have both written material and a sample for future reference.
Students should bring: Scissors, 2 stitch markers, approx. 430 yards sock yarn, size 6 circular or straight needles and approx. 1000 6/0 beads.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOWL, KNITTING AS ART ( 3 hour class)

This fun class will allow you to explore the wild side of knitting. Use basic knitting skills to create a one-of-a-kind art bowl for display. Bring lots of colors of wool yarn and look at design, color mixing and texture, including felting and embellishment techniques. Some embellishment materials and tools will be available for use in class.

MEDITATION FOR ALL (2 hour class)

This class will teach the basics of meditation while considering how meditation can help us in our everyday lives. There will be teaching about the background of meditation from a Buddhist perspective, the Dharma, though this class is for people of any denomination.
Students should bring: a blanket to roll up and sit on or two if you need something substantial to support yourself. Ideally we will be sitting on the ground, though for those who require sitting in chairs, this is fine.

HAND PAINTED YARNS: A NEW APPROACH (3 hour class)

Paint yarn like you’d paint on canvas! Students in this unique workshop will learn to create hand painted yarns from pre-knit “flats.” After the painting is complete, the flat is unraveled and the yarn can be re-knit to create one-of-a-kind socks, scarves, shawls…whatever is appropriate. Class will work with modern commercial dyes in a wide array of colors and experiment with a variety of application methods. Supply fee includes one 100-gram merino wool flat and all material, plus a resource list and video tutorial to take home.
Students should bring: Old clothes or bring an old shirt or apron to wear in class, since dye stains are permanent.

Sashiko is a quilting and embroidery technique from Japan. It’s a running stitch originally used to mend and reinforce garments and textiles. Today it’s used for decorative purposes. It is simple to learn the beginning technique and you will enjoy the traditional patterns too! The class will learn the stitch, start a sampler and learn more about the history of sashiko.

Expand your creative output with these intricate ropes using a simple braiding loom that you can take home. We will discuss patterns and techniques of Traditional Japanese Braiding(Kumihimo) and practice a number of braiding styles. A traditional wood kumihimo stand and bobbins will be set up for demonstrations and use.
Students should bring: Sharp & blunt needles and about 30 yards of strong smooth yarn (like mercerized cotton or silk) in two contracting colors.

SILK THE QUEEN OF FIBERS (6 hour class)

Silk is perhaps the most mysterious of all our natural fibers, coming to us as a gift from a lowly caterpillar. As you hear my amazing story of raising silkworms, you will explore a variety of handspinning techniques to use with silk. First we will change hard silk cocoons into soft spinnable fiber by degumming. You will also spin an assortment of silk fibers that are available to today’s spinner: domesticated Bombyx and wild Tussah silk fibers in expanded mawata like hankies, combed tops and carded noils.
Student should bring: A good working wheel and hand cards, about a dozen 3×5 file cards and sandwich baggies, scissors, hole punch, stapler or tape for attaching sample yarns and fibers, your usual assortment of wheel tools – screw driver, oil, etc., hand cream and a small towel.

KNIT TO FIT (3 hour class)

CROCHET: SIMPLE MOTIFS, ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES (3 hour class)

Students will learn to work in rounds while making motifs in crochet, including squares, triangles and rectangles. We’ll explore several joining techniques and discuss some of the many design possibilities these simple “granny” motifs can inspire while making a small sachet or purse. Students must know basic crochet stitcher prior to class including chain, slop, single and double crochet.
Student should bring: Small amounts of different colored yarns in similar weights and a crochet hook of corresponding size.

INDIGO SHIBORI DYEING (3 hour class)

The Japanese work “Shibori” translates to wring or squeeze, it also encompasses different forms of tie dyeing. Fabric or yarn may be bound, stitched or gathered, folded or clamped, wrapped around poles or pleated Each method produces a different type of pattern. In this class the students will be folding, wrapping, clamping with coins, wooden blocks and more and then stitching, tying knots and pleating before dying with indigo, a dye plant that gives a blue to dye for! There will be some dipping and splashing so dress in dark clothes.
Student should bring: Scissors, notebook, pen and rubber gloves.

MITERED SQUARE CUFF ( 3 hour class)

Skill level: need to know knitting & purling and working in the round
Learn to knit easy and beautiful mitered squares. In this class, students will learn the basics of mitered square knitting, then make cuffs for mittens or socks, with self-striping, worsted yarns. Students will then have the option of using their cuffs to make mittens(regular or fingerless) or socks. Instructions for knitting mitered squares, and patterns for both styles of mittens, and for socks with short-row heels will be provided. Emphasis will be on learning mitered squares. Students may or may not progress far enough to begin working on the body of the sock or mitten.
Student should bring: Size 5 needles (4/5 dpns, or 1 or 2 circs as desired), 100-150 gr worsted weight self-striping yarn( can substitute assorted leftover worsted weight yarns), 2 safety pins, 1 stitch marker and a large-eye needle.

This useful basket will help keep the clutter off the table or countertop. Will hang on a door knob or on the wall. Always wanted to weave a basket – this is the perfect beginner basket. It has some space dyed reed to brighten it up as well as a leather handle. Size 8 x 2.5 x 8H.

SPINNING 102: LONG DRAW AND PLYING (3 hour class)

This is a spinning class for the advanced beginning spinner. Students should be able to spin a single ply yarn prior class. In this class, students will learn the basics of plying. Navajo plying and planned thick n’ thin yarn will be explored as well as long draw with the goal being able to spin a balanced yarn.
Student should bring: A good working spinning wheel, 2 bobbins of spun single ply wool and an empty bobbin.

BASIC ALPACA & LLAMA CARE ( 3 hour class)

This is a basic class in how to raise and care for Alpacas and Llamas for the person that is just wanting some fiber boys or just wanting them as pets. The class will be going over shearing, what is needed for shelter, fencing and food. We will also be learning some of their body language as well as what to expect and resources that will help you before and after you get alpacas or llamas.
Student should bring: a notebook for taking notes.

LOCKER HOOKING COASTERS OR TRIVET (3 hour class)

Skill level: Beginner, ages 8 years to adult
Using rug canvas, string and fabric strips, students will make one coaster and leave with enough materials to make 3 more. You can also choose to begin one trivet. Students will create a design to put on their piece and learn edging, filing and finishing techniques. Easy enough for a child with good eye hand coordination while challenging enough for adults to learn. A good portable project and a great way to use up long strips left from garment construction and quilting! We’ll even talk about ways to use other and recycled materials.
Student should bring: Scissors, rotary cutter, ruler and mat (last 3 optional).

Basic obedience, so that you can “live” with your dog. How to control and interact with your dog in all situations. Learn to talk dog and be the pack leader!
Student should bring: Their dog, themselves and if wanted other family members, regular collar, 4-6ft. leash and treats you dog can swallow quickly (soft treats work best).

SAORI FREE-STYLE WEAVING (3 hour class)

Skill level: Beginner, children & adults
SAORI weaving places importance of free expression and creativity more than of techniques. Students in this class will relax, enjoy, explore and express positively through weaving. Come enjoy textures, colors and let your inherent creative expression unfold. Take home what you weave during class. The finished project might be a scarf, table runner and wall hanging.
Everything will be provided; however, the student may bring things they wish to incorporate into their weaving. This will not affect the materials fee.
